"Thanks to Tim's magic, a mixed bag of user insights, technical requirements and content needs got transformed into an elegant and practical design solution, making the project a success (and my life as a technologist easy)."

OVERVIEW

In 2020 I was asked by the great people at Cummins &Partners to get involved in a secretive project. To redesign the website for ASIS (Australian Secret Intelligence Service), at the time it was so secret we couldn’t even mention their name.

The team had already engaged with the client, and the project was well underway when I stepped on board.

This project was almost purely UI Design, but I also worked with the content and production team to help shape the content, and ensure that we sold the value we were delivering back to the client in the most effective way possible.

THE CHALLENGE

The key challenge in this project was really the timeframe allocated to get the work done in.

Along with the need to provide the client with enough visibility of all of the content without having to design every single page.

THE SOLUTION

As with most modern CMS-driven websites, we created a set of modular content blocks that provided all of the required functionality and layout requirements.

To help communicate the final outcomes to the client, along with the standard designs of key pages in three breakpoints, I also developed a visual site map to support the content documentation.

Each content block was given a code and referred to in the content deck, which was supported by a visual sitemap that showed which content modules were used on each page.

This approach allowed the team to go from approved content and I.A, to approved key content blocks to final design presentation with:

  • A full set of agreed requirements.
  • Personas and I.A.
  • Key approaches to resolving requirements.
  • ‍Defined modular content blocks.
  • Key pages in three breakpoints.
  • Visual site map.
  • Hero path clickable prototypes for two key personas.
MY REFLECTIONS

Freelancing for agencies can be a great experience when you are working with a competent team.
This project benefited from a solid content strategy, a well-resolved brand, and an efficient team.
